AGENDA ITEM 7E
STAFF MEMBER Daniel Tesch, Assistant City Administrator
DATE 5 August 1998
SUBJECT Cable Franchise Ordinance Amendment
BACKGROUND
The North Metro Telecommunications Commission has been negotiating the renewal of
the cable television franchise, which is due to expire in September of this year. The
commission is in the process of a comprehensive needs analysis which will identify our
communities' needs, and assist in the renegotiation of the franchise agreement.
Based on the experience of several neighboring commission, who are also in the middle
of the renewal process, our legal counsel is recommending that the current franchise be
extended to March 18, 1999. This would insure adequate time to finalize our
negotiations.
All seven cities in the franchise area will need to approve this ordinance.
OPTIONS
1. Approve Ordinance 10 -98.
2. Deny Ordinance 10 - 98. The Franchise would expire without our being able
to negotiate a renewal. Amendment of the franchise needs unanimous
approval of the seven cities involved - Circle Pine, Centerville, Blaine,
Spring Lake Park, Ham Lake, Lexington. Failure to approve would
affect the above listed cities.
RECOMMENDATION
1.
