Telecommunications Commission Media Center IMMEDIATE ATTENTION REQUESTED July 20, 1998 Mr. Dan Tesch Assistant to City Manager City of Lino Lakes 1189 Main Street Lino Lakes, MN 55014 Dear Mr. Tesch: As you know, the North Metro Telecommunications Commission has been negotiating on behalf of its member cities, the renewal of the current cable television franchise which is due to expire in September of 1998. As part of this process, the Commission has completed a comprehensive needs analysis of the system's Institutional Network (I -Net) and continues to assess the needs of the Subscriber Network (Sub -Net). The Commission will submit the results of this needs analysis to the cable operator who will respond with a proposal intended to meet the identified needs. Upon completion of negotiations between the Commission and the operator for a new franchise, the Commission will make a recommendation to its member cities regarding the adoption of a new cable franchise ordinance. Based on the experience of several neighboring Commissions that have gone through this same process before us, our legal counsel is recommending that the current franchise be extended to March 18, 1999, in order to insure adequate time to finalize our negotiations. Enclosed please find a draft ordinance amendment which provides for an extension of the current franchise term to March 18, 1999. The Commission requests that this amendment be placed on the council's agenda for consideration and action at their next meeting.
