• <br />STAFF ORIGINATOR: <br />DATE: <br />TOPIC: <br />VOTE REQUIRED: <br />AGENDA ITEM 1B <br />Jean Viger, Deputy City Clerk <br />February 28, 2005 <br />Resolution No. 05 -25, Approving Canvasser /Solicitor <br />License for ACORN (Minnesota Association of <br />Community Organizations for Reform Now) <br />Simple Majority (3/5 Vote) <br />BACKGROUND: <br />Minnesota ACORN has submitted an application to obtain a non -profit <br />canvasser /solicitor license from the City of Lino Lakes. Minnesota ACORN is a non- <br />profit organization whose priorities include helping the working poor families own a <br />home of their own. Mr. Marc Wermager will be soliciting the Lino Lakes neighborhood <br />seeking charitable donations to further the organization's mission. (see attached flyers) <br />s <br />Minnesota ACORN has complied with all of the provisions of the Lino Lakes City Code <br />for obtaining the necessary license, including a background check on Mr. Wermager. <br />The Lino Lakes Police Department is conducting the investigation and will have a report <br />prior to Council consideration. The fee for non -profit organizations is waived. <br />The application, completed by Chris Saffert, the head organizer, the personal history <br />form, completed by the solicitor Mr. Wermager, the non -profit certificate of authority for <br />both Minnesota ACORN and its parent organization, the American Institute for Social <br />Justice, Minnesota Project and the background investigation results are on file in the city <br />clerk's office for review. <br />Minnesota ACORN canvassed in Lino Lakes from May 25th through November 25th, <br />2004. There were no complaints by residents and no violations by the organization. <br />OPTIONS: <br />1. Approve Resolution No. 05 -25 <br />2. Deny Resolution No. 05 -25 <br />RECOMMENDATION: <br />Option No. 1 <br />
