•
MEMORANDUM
February 15, 2001
to: Milo Bennet
from: Jeff Smyser
subject: Prairie Grass Controlled Burning
cc: John Powell, Marty Aslesen, Brian Wessel
At the February 13 meeting of the Planning & Zoning Board, the Board had questions
about the need to burn native prairie grass. The question came up during the discussion
of the Summit Fire Protection project on Apollo Drive. The Board asked for Fire Dept.
comment. (Merely a coincidence that this project — Summit Fire Protection — prompted a
formal request for info.)
The P & Z requests comment from the Fire Dept. regarding the burning of the prairie
grass plantings. This request concerns not only this project, but the burns in general.
There have been numerous commercial projects in past months that, based on
recommendations from the Environmental Board and Marty, have included native prairie
grasses in the landscaping plan. The P & Z has expressed concern about this in the past,
but this time they specifically asked for Fire Dept. comment.
This project will go to City Council in March, but I would greatly appreciate your
comments as soon as possible to allow City staff time to examine the issue further before
City Council review. Please address your comments to me and I will pass them on to the
City Council and P & Z.
Thanks for your help.
Please feel free to call with any questions at (651)982 -2425.
•
