CITY COUNCIL AGENDA ITEM 3C STAFF ORIGINATOR: Jeff Karlson, City Administrator MEETING DATE: August 11, 2014 TOPIC: Charter Commission Request for Additional Funding VOTE REQUIRED: 3/5 INTRODUCTION The Council is being asked to approve additional funding for the Lino Lakes Charter Commission to complete its review of the Council's proposed amendments. BACKGROUND During the April 7, 2014 work session, the Council agreed to a $600 budget increase for the Charter Commission so their attorney could review the Council's two proposed amendments to Section 8 of the City Charter. The Charter Commission held special meetings on July 25 and August 1 to continue its evaluation of the two amendments. In order to have their attorney present at the meetings, the Commission asked the Council to approve up to $3,400 of additional funding. The Council considered this request at its July 28 meeting, but wanted more specific details as to what the funds were going to be used for. Charter Commission Chair Connie Sutherland responded to the Council's request and was present at the August 4th work session to explain that the additional funds would go toward legal fees for their attorney to attend the special meetings and for time spent on research. The Commission also held a third special meeting on August 6. The Council agreed to approve an additional $725, which provides the Commission an additional five hours of legal fees. The extra expenses will come from the contingency fund in the 2014 budget. RECOMMENDATION Approve additional funding of $1,325 for the Charter Commission, which includes $600 the Council previously agreed to on April 7, 2014.
