•
COUNCIL MINUTES OCTOBER 14, 1996
To The Editor:
We have never objected to paying taxes. A recent near catastrophic incident showed
us what excellent services our local tax dollars bring us. A furnace fire due to a faulty
switch set off our smoke alarm. Soon smoke was billowing through the house. A
few moments after we called 911, Circle Pines Lexington Police arrived followed by
fire trucks from the Centennial Fire District. The fire was put out so promptly and
expertly our home sustained little damage. Firemen used a powerful fan and some
water spray so our furniture and belongings sustained almost no water damage. One
of the policemen phoned our son informing him of the fire but telling him that we
were all right. He also reassured our anxious neighbors. Fire Chief Milo Bennett
proved himself not only thoroughly professional in the way he directed his well-
trained men, but was also sensitive to our fears. Fire Marshall Kathy Mischke treated
our possessions with the consideration she would have given her own, and was
friendly, reassuring and helpful. How could anyone complain about local taxes that
are so well spent.
Grace and Andy Gibis
Circle Pines
Mayor Landers added his thanks to the Fire Chief, acknowledging his hard work.
NEW BUSINESS
• REMINDER, Public Hearing Regarding Organized Solid Waste, Wednesday, October 30,
1996, 6:30 P.M.
Mayor Landers indicated his impression that this would be a neighborhood meeting for fact
gathering purposes.
Mr. Schumacher stated that a public hearing cannot be held unless so designated. He suggested
contacting the coordinator to change the October 30th activity to an informational meeting,
bringing it back to Council for setting a public hearing.
Council Member Kuether suggested that Council needs to know public feeling, and that the
public should be notified as to why the City is considering this matter.
Attorney Hawkins indicated that the City is required by Statute to hold this public hearing, which
should be set by Council.
Mayor Landers indicated that previous discussion with the coordinator and Council Members
Neal and Bergeson was with regard to a neighborhood information -gathering meeting. Council
Member Bergeson expressed agreement.
Council Member Kuether moved to approve the public hearing to gather information from
residents regarding solid waste removal. Council Member Bergeson seconded the motion.
Motion carried unanimously.
• Mayor Landers indicated that the entire solid waste committee will be present at this public
hearing to respond to questions.
