COUNCIL WORK SESSION JANUARY 21, 1998
Update on Police Department Discussions - Lino Lakes, Centerville, Circle Pines,
Lexington and Blaine have had discussions regarding a consolidated police department
similar to the Centennial Fire District organization. The concerns expressed have been
mostly operational. One of the concerns is personnel. The Blaine Police Department is
adamant that if they take the territory, they will not take the personnel. This also would
be the position of Lino Lakes. Each police department has its own culture. No two (2)
departments are the same. A consolidated department would present many concerns if
personnel were to unit.
At this time, Circle Pines is in discussion with Anoka County and the City of Blaine.
Staff was asked to define this City's policing standards and be prepared to discuss options
for policing at the next work session.
Dave explained that if the other cities do contract with the County for olice,p 'otection,
he would demand a contract with Anoka County to balance the calls that the Lino Lakes
Police Department would be taking outside of this City.
Kim said that she preferred consolidation or a contract.
Chris said that Hugo is not a "player". He would not be interested in anything other than
a contract with Centerville.
John said that a commission idea such as the Centennial Fire District seems most
efficient. However, the funding mechanism would be a problem as well as the growing
number of calls in Lexington. e favored a contract if the contract price was right.
REGULAR AGE
All items on
alar agenda were discussed.
The meeting as adjourned at 9:20 p.m.
These minutes were considered, corrected and approved
on May 10, 1999.
f
Viger, Deputy
ar Council meeting held
K " berl an, Mayor
PAGE 6
•
•
•
