Non -competition with existing services <br />Finance Director Rolek advised that due to financial information in the feasibility report, staff is <br />recommending the Council continue the public hearing to the September 10, 2001, City Council <br />meeting. <br />Council Member Carlson stated there are residents present who may wish to speak to this issue. <br />Mayor Bergeson stated the staff recommendation is to continue the public hearing. Comments can be <br />taken but residents need to understand the final subsidy request figures may change from what was <br />printed in the agenda and newspaper. <br />Mayor Bergeson opened the public hearing at 6:55 p.m. <br />Ms. Rochelle Miller, 7725 Maryland Drive, stated she has contacted several City Administrators in <br />local cities. All of them indicated they told Ryan Companies no when the equested a subsidy. The <br />City of Lakeville said they gave them no financial assistance, rather th ived a subsidy from <br />Target. This is what has to happen here. If the City can not benef -the h. to say no. The City is the one that has the <br />power, not Target. <br />Mr. Jeff Rutz, 6996 Second Avenue, stated Target and Ryan Companies should be commended <br />because of their success. However, everyone has to work on a budget. The proposal is trying to make <br />it look like it is not a lot of money and it is a lot of money. We have to ask if it is being spent in the <br />right way. He stated he moved here three (3) years ago for the lakes and green space. The City <br />should spend money on things that will benefit the City like the YMCA. Target would be great here, <br />but they should have to spend the money. The City has to help the community first. <br />Mr. Tom Smith, 874 Oak Lane, stated the road improvement hearing is on September 24th, but a vote <br />on the abatement is on September 10th. He stated that should not be done. He asked if the City is <br />setting a precedence and if other businesses would have the right to financial help if the abatement is <br />approved. <br />4 <br />
