COUNCIL MINUTES MARCH 11, 2002
and west along the southern boundary line of Sections 11 and 10 from shore to shore. The no -wake
zone would be for all surface water on Peltier Lake north of this line.
Ms. Galli noted, on March 6, 2002, the Lino Lakes City Council heard testimony from lakeshore
homeowners regarding the proposed alignment of the no -wake boundary. In response to the concerns
of the homeowners, two alternative alignments have been defined as follows:
Alternative 1— The no -wake zone boundary line would be a line extending from the west
shore of the lake east along the southern boundary line of Sections 11 and 10 to a point
directly south of the southeast corner of the island. The line would then angle northeasterly to
a permanent survey point located on the eastern shore of Peltier Lake on property owned by
Mr. Ronald Marier, which lies due west of the southernmost building of Mr. Marier's
property. The slow no -wake zone is proposed for all surface water on Peltier Lake north of
this line.
Alternative 2 — The no -wake boundary is a line located
extending from the west shore of the lake to a point
the island then angling northeasterly to a permanen
of Peltier Lake on property owned by Mr. Ronal
southernmost outbuilding of Mr. Marier's prop
all surface water on Peltier Lake north of this line.
Ms. Galli stated the Nongame Wildlife Progr
Additionally, providing funding is available,
again monitor the colony in 2002 and condi
northern portion of the lake.
Ms. Galli indicated bald eagles hav
the herons. She indicated most heron rookeries have had eagles in or near the
rookery and none of those rookeries have been abandoned. She stated she has also queried her
associates that work throughout the State, asking repeatedly if there was any evidence of negative
interaction between eagles and herons and the answer has consistently been no.
Mr. Galli stated last year, when the Peltier island rookery was abandoned for the second time, tree
climbers climbed into the eagle nests and found no evidence that eagles have been taking young
herons from their nests. She stated her department is monitoring all the causes for heron failure they
can think of and are taking every action they can to eliminate the possible causes that are within their
power to do so. She stated regulating human disturbance is a well documented recommendation by
water bird biologists around the Country in order to protect the birds.
south of Peltier Island and
th of the southeast corner of
point located on the eastern shore
d which lies due west of the
The slow, no -wake zone is proposed for
•
her one of the two alternatives acceptable. di
;ndicated the Nongame Wildlife Program will once
a.
odic surveys of other wildlife activity in the
e island prior to the abandonment of the island by
les nested on the island in 2000 and 2001.
