COUNCIL MINUTES MARCH 11, 2002 <br />indicates the need for at least a 300 -meter nesting and buffer zone for great blue heron nests and the <br />birds tend to abandon nests when larger disturbances occur within 500 meters. She stated it is not <br />easy to make a decision when there are so many different opinions. She noted the number of different <br />proposals that have been made to address this situation and felt a no -wake zone beginning 200 feet <br />south of the island would be a compromise. She hoped all parties could leave this evening's meeting <br />feeling that something has been gained that will benefit the City and surrounding communities. <br />Mayor Bergeson asked what the City Council could do to encourage continued studies to determine <br />why the herons have left the island. <br />Ms. Galli stated the study of the Peltier Lake rookery will move forward this year and, providing the <br />funding is available, the rookery will continued to be monitored in future years. <br />Mr. Perry stated Anoka County will contribute staff time to monitor the heron rookery. He stated the <br />entire northern reach of Peltier Lake is a critical issue to the Co� <br />Environmental Specialist Asleson noted Charles Johnson of <br />recommended that letters sent to the Watershed District en <br />Lake island would be helpful. Councilmember Carlson seconded the motion. <br />Mayor Bergeson requested confirmation that City staff will inform the City of Centerville of the <br />actions taken this evening.
