•
•
•
CITY COUNCIL WORK SESSION MARCH 3, 2004
APPROVED

DISCUSS PROPOSED AUGUST, 2004 EVENT AT MILLER'S ON MAIN, AND
POSSIBLE ADDITIONAL COMMUNITY EVENTS, CHAD WAGNER, ANN
BLAIR

City Clerk Blair distributed and a reviewed a copy of a resolution that was passed by the
Council last year in regard to a Miller's on Main special event. The event was a success
although there were a few complaints. A meeting was held after the event to see how it
could be improved. Mr. Chad Wagner, Miller's on Main, is present this evening to ask
for a similar approval for an August 2004 event similar to last year's event. A group of
individuals have organized a committee to get local businesses involved in this year's
event that may include a parade.

Mr. Wagner advised many local businesses are involved this year and County
Commissioner Rhonda Sivarajah has indicated she is very supportive of including a
parade in this year's event. He stated the committee is meeting and discussing several
ideas for the event including a pageant, car show and 5K run.

Mayor Bergeson suggested Mr. Wagner coordinate a calendar with City Clerk Blair in
terms of Council action and necessary approvals. A list of issues from the City's
perspective should also be included.

City Clerk Blair stated she has attended the committee's meeting but would like Council
direction on whether or not to continue attending those meetings.

Mayor Bergeson stated Lino Lakes has not had a City sponsored event. The Council
should discuss that issue at some point in time. He suggested Mr. Wagner coordinate
with staff in regard to coming back to the City Council with the details of the event.

Chief Pecchia stated there were some resident complaints about the event last year. If the
City is involved with the event, the City will have to look at staffing from the public
safety aspect and the cost of that staffing. The last time there was a parade in the City
streets had to be closed, police had to direct traffic and line up the parade, which was very
costly. Eventually, the sponsors did pay for those costs. The budget has been cut and if
City staff is utilized for the event a funding source will have to be determined to pay
those costs.

Councilmember Reinert requested a breakdown of the costs associated with the last
parade that was in the City.

Mr. Wagner stated they are going to try to have the 5K race in the parks as opposed to the
street. There will be costs associated with a City event but believes those issues can be
resolved. He noted he is not asking the City to be a sponsor of the event.

A representative from Target added that their parking lot could be used for certain events
such as a car show or starting place for the parade.
