AGENDA ITEM 4B
STAFF ORIGINATOR: Linda Waite Smith, City Administrator
MEETING DATE: September 9, 2002
TOPIC: Consider Changes to Electrical Inspections
Resolution 02-119, Terminating Contract with K. L.
Peterson, d/b/a Suburban Inspections
Ordinance 10-02, Repealing Ordinance 18-95,
Establishing Position of Electrical Inspector
Resolution 02-120, Authorizing Contract with State of
Minnesota to Provide Electrical Inspections
VOTE REQUIRED: 3/5
BACKGROUND:
We are in the middle of a two-year contract with K. L. Peterson, Inc., doing business as
Suburban Inspections, to provide electrical inspections. The contract contains insurance
requirements, which if not met, make the contract terminate immediately. Mr. Peterson's
insurance coverage expires September 10, 2002, and he has indicated he will not renew it.
Therefore, the City must officially terminate the contract and make alternative
arrangements to provide electrical inspections.
Staff is recommending the City contract with the State of Minnesota to provide electrical
inspections and we have been advised that can occur within 30 days. We have also been
advised that Ordinance 18-95 which authorized the City to establish an Electrical
Inspector position and collect permit fees must be appealed before we can contract with
the State. Given the short notice of Mr. Peterson's intent and the need to maintain
electrical inspections, the City Attorney has advised we can use an emergency ordinance
to repeal Ordinance 18-95.
Therefore, we are requesting Council action on three items:
1. Adopt Resolution 02-119, terminating the contract with K. L. Peterson, Inc., d/b/a
Suburban Inspections, effective September 10, 2002.
Approve Emergency Ordinance 10-02, appealing Ordinance 18-95, establishing the
position and duties of electrical inspector.
3. Adopt Resolution 02-120, Authorizing the City of Lino Lakes to Contract with the
State of Minnesota to Provide Electrical Inspections.
OPTIONS:
