Ms. Sue Doll, Solid Waste Specialist from Anoka County, presented a certificate to Mr.
Asleson that stated “ The Anoka County Board of Commissioners acknowledges with
great appreciation the commitment to recycling of Marty Asleson. Thank you for 29
years of improving waste reduction, recycling and composting programs for the residents
of Lino Lakes and Anoka County working with the compost and recycling”. Under Mr.
Asleson’s leadership the City of Lino Lakes started monthly Recycling Saturdays and
organics collecting.
Ms. Doll discussion was about the benefits of recycling and what recycling items are
worth in today’s market. You should remember that recycling is a commodity, it goes up
and down just like anything else on the market.
Great River Recycling opened in August of 1989 and closed mid January 2019, it was
where the area garbage was burned for energy at the Great River Energy at Elk River.
Now that garbage will be going to landfills. So recycling is even more important.
The market still wants material but what they want is good, clean and marketable
material.
Anchor Glass in Shakopee takes clean clear glass and makes new glass, Strategic
Recycling in St. Paul takes broken pieces of glass and mixed glass and comes out with
piles of different colored glass which then is marketable.
Curbside recycling single sort bin items have to be separated either by machines or
people and are highlighted below –
Plastics that are recyclable are #1, #2 and #5.
#1 are mostly soft drink beverage containers or bottles with a neck, (take lids off
jars and don’t crush the containers).
#2 are cleaning products, shampoo, etc.,
#5 are usually dairy containers, yogart containers, and some to-go cups, etc.
Boxes should be flatten
Plastic bags should be taken to grocery stores not in your curbside recycling
container
Shedded paper should be kept with other shedded paper. Don’t put it into the
curbside recycling container
Communicate using highlights of the correct way to recycle and what should be in your
curbside recycling container, since there are some changes that people may not be aware
of.
Mr. Schwartz suggested to email the organics participants since we have their address
just a reminder of how and what to recycle.

Ms. Doll added that every trash hauler will give you another recycling container at no
cost.
“When in doubt throw it out”
B. Earth Day Discussion
There was adequete number of people helping out with the city’s table.
Posters are a good vechicle for information. The posters do need some repair and
updating. The Heron poster and Waste program poster could have pictures that could be
taken on and off easily as well the updated information.
City’s web site needs some updating as far as recycling, elm tree disposal, etc.
Seed balls are still a hit – we should have a photo of the end result of the growth of the
plants from the seed ball.
There were 5 groups that picked up trash within the city.
VIII. ADJOURNMENT
Ms. Andrzejewski made a MOTION to adjourn the meeting at 8:17 p.m. Ms. Kaufenberg
supported motion. Motion carried 6 - 0.
Respectfully submitted,
Mary Fogarty
