SUBJECT: Updates
With the cancellation of the July Park Board Meeting due to lack of agenda items, I
wanted to provide Park Board Members some updates.
Behm's Park and Highland Meadows Park Shelters — Both shelters, along with the
restoration work, were completed prior to the Summer Playground Program
commencing. Both shelters turned out great! Check them out sometime.
2006 Birch Street Trail Project — The City Council awarded the construction contract to
TA Schifsky and Sons, Inc. at the June 26 Council Meeting. The pre- construction
meeting is scheduled for July 6 with construction beginning shortly thereafter. Our
intent is to have substantial completion of the project prior to September 1.
Shenandoah Park Sign — City staff has worked with an area Eagle Scout, John
Gavanda, to replace the park sign /landscape bed at Shenandoah Park. Mr. Gavanda
and his scout troop did a great job laying the landscape block, planting the shrubs, and
spreading the mulch. It looks great!
Parks Update — The June Parks Update is attached for your review.
Recreation Update — Attached is the June Recreation Update for your review.
Have an enjoyable and safe Fourth of July.

SUBJECT: June Maintenance Highlights
Maintenance activity during the month of June has included:
• Weekly mowing of all parks (some athletic fields twice weekly).
❖ Weekly garbage collection.
• Repaired and installed fishing dock at Country Lakes Park.
❖ Irrigation system maintenance. (Repaired main breaks at Birch, Sunrise, and Highland
Meadows Parks.)
❖ Remounted bench at Rice Lake Elementary basketball court. Replaced nets on hoops.
• Daily athletic field maintenance and game preparation.
• Weekly watering of newly planted boulevard and park trees as well as sod around new
gazebos.
••• Storm water compliance inspections.
• Burned prairie restoration site in South Reshanau Lakes Estates Development. (Area was
sprayed with Roundup first to kill existing vegetation. We plan to total kill the site again
in early August, reburn it and then seed it to native grasses and wildflowers. The
chemical control and burning is being done to reduce competition from the non - native
plants that had taken over the site.)
❖ Fertilized approximately 45 acres of turf.
• Core aerated soccer and lacrosse fields at Centennial Middle School and Rice Lake
Elementary School.
• Repaired picnic tables and delivered to parks.
• Flail mowed trail edges.
• Replaced 30' of damaged trail along Birch Street (contracted).
❖ Built additional railings onto Trapper's staircase to eliminate bicycles from using private
property to access boardwalk.
❖ Equipment maintenance and repair.
• Removed Shenandoah Park sign. New sign and landscaping will be installed as part of
an Eagle Scout Project.
• Assisted Liz with getting playground sites ready. (Cleaned shelters, delivered tables, etc.)
•
•
Gazebo installation at Behm's and highland Meadows:
- Site preparation done by staff.
- Gazebo footings and slab (contracted).
- Gazebo installation (contracted).

YOUTH
Playground Program: Playgrounds are up and running! We have experienced a decline in our registration numbers
this year which is probably due to the new format (we received a few complaints about the new format - particularly
from the neighborhoods that have only a morning program this year when last year they had an afternoon program).
We will evaluate the program at the end of the summer and make changes if necessary. Despite the significantly lower
numbers and initial complaints, things are going very smoothly and the kids are having a great time! Total enrolled in
this summer's M/W & T /Th Playground Programs is 272 participants. Last summer's total was 342 total participants.
Preschool Playtime: Preschool Playtime is also going smoothly. We have 18 registered (the maximum) in our M/W
program and 13 registered in our T/Th program. This is slightly lower than last summer's participation levels, but still
very positive. The program is now operated very similar to our Playground Program - it includes the same weekly
themes and visits from the Art Specialist, as well as many similar games and activities. The main differences between
the two are lower staff to child ratios, smaller group size and shorter time frame each day at Preschool Playtime.
Summer Youth Instructional Programs:
T -Ball: We offered 10 classes for 3, 4, & 5/6 year olds the month of June, each class had between 10 -15 registered.
Mini -Hawk Sports Academy: This program for 4 -6 year olds ran June 19 -23 and had 12 participants signed up. This
program gives children the opportunity to sample a variety of sports including basketball, soccer, and t -ball.
Soccer Fundamentals: Soccer Fundamentals began the week of June 19. 97 participants signed up for this session.
Kids ages 3 -8 are learning basic soccer skills while having fun playing soccer.
Golf Academy: Golf Academy ran the week of June 12. 10 kids were registered in the week long golf camp that
culminated with playing nine holes of golf on the final day.
*lag Football: Flag Football for ages 7 -12 ran the week of June 19. Each camper learned passing, blocking and
running skills that pertain to football. 29 participants signed up for this program.
YLM Youth Lacrosse: This is a developmental lacrosse league for kids ages 9 -15. We have 3 teams (3/4 grade,
5/6 grade, and 7/8 grade) this year. Home games are at Centennial Middle School almost every Thursday. 70 kids are
registered for all teams combined.
Intro - Lacrosse Camp: This camp for children ages 10 -14 ran the week of June 19. Participants learned basic,
cradling, stick handling, passing, and shooting skills that apply to the game of lacrosse. 14 kids participated.
Tennis Camp: This program started the week of June 12. 25 total participants registered. These children, ages 4 -12,
learned basic tennis skills.
Fall Soccer and Football: Youth Fall Soccer and Football registration began June 19. We anticipate 450 soccer
players and 325 football players. The last day to register is Monday, July 17.

summer. We have 5 registered for the June 23
trip and 10 registered for the July 7 trip.
