HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001-051 Council ResolutionCouncil Member ,(,( n.0 introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption: CITY OF LINO LAKES RESOLUTION NO. 01-51 RESOLUTION DONATING $1,000 TO THE CENTENNIAL A- BANTAM HOCKEY TEAM TO COMPETE IN THE 2001 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. WHEREAS, the Centennial A -Bantam Hockey team includes 17 eighth and ninth grade students, 14 of whom are residents of Lino Lakes, and, WHEREAS, on March 18, 2001, the Centennial A -Bantam Hockey team won the State Bantam A Championship game in Willmar, MN, and, WHEREAS, winning the State Championship makes the Centennial A -Bantam Hockey team eligible to play in the National Finals in Philadelphia, and, WHEREAS, it will cost approximately $20,000 for the Centennial A -Bantam Hockey team to travel to Philadelphia to compete in the National Championship game, and, • WHEREAS, this is the first time in the city's history that a Centennial Hockey team has played in a National Championship game, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LINO LAKES, MINNESOTA: In recognition of the unique opportunity to play in the National Finals in Philadelphia, PA, the City of Lino Lakes will donate $1,000 to the Centennial A -Bantam Hockey team to help defray the cost of traveling to the competition. Adopted by the City Council this 26th day of March, 2001. The team includes 17 eighth and ninth grade students, 14 of whom live in Lino Lakes. The team is now eligible to compete in the National Championship games in Philadelphia, PA the week of April 4 -8. The cost of travel and lodging for the team is estimated to be $20,000. Parents and coaches are seeking donations to defray the costs. Because this is the first time a Centennial hockey team has been eligible to compete in a national championship and the time to raise travel funds is very limited, the City Council indicated at its March 21, 2001, work session, a desire to donate $1,000 to the team. OPTIONS: 1. Adopt Resolution 01 -51, donating $1,000 from the Mayor and Council's City Marketing budget to the Centennial A -Bantam Hockey team to help defray expenses related to competing in the National Finals in April 2001. 2. Decline to approve Resolution 01 -51. 3. Return to staff for further review and/or action. RECOMMENDATION: Option #1: Adopt Resolution 01 -51 donating $1,000 from the Mayor and Council's City Marketing budget to the Centennial A -Bantam Hockey team to help defray expenses related to competing in the National Finals in April 2001. •
