STAFF REPORT <br />DATE: November 19, 2024 <br /> CONSENT <br /> <br />AGENDA ITEM: Approve Senior City Planner promotion. <br />SUBMITTED BY: Karissa Goers, Administrative Services Director <br />REVIEWED BY: Jason Stopa, Community Development Director <br /> <br />BACKGROUND: <br />Earlier this spring were not successful in hiring a Senior Planner for the Community <br />Development department. This resulted in the Community Development Director reorganizing <br />the department in order to support current staff with a career path and encourage retention with <br />the City. We promoted the current planning assistant to a city planner and hired a planning <br />assistant. Allowing the department to grow from the bottom up, with staff being trained and <br />learning the City’s procedures. This change enhances the Community Development department <br />and is a strategic solution to succession planning. <br /> <br />ISSUE BEFORE COUNCIL: <br />Should the Council promote Sophia Jensen to Senior City Planner at the terms listed below? <br /> <br />PROPOSAL DETAILS/ANALYSIS: <br />Sophia was hired as the Planning Intern in May of 2021. She was offered a permanent position as <br />Code Enforcement Officer in January of 2022. She was promoted to City Planner in January of <br />2023. Sophia has been instrumental in assisting and managing the planning needs for the city in <br />the community development department over the past three years. Oftentimes working without <br />the mentorship and supervision of a community development director. Staff proposes hiring <br />Sophia at grade 9, step 4 which is $42.52 per hour. <br /> <br />FISCAL IMPACT: <br />This position has been included in the 2025 budget. <br /> <br />OPTIONS: <br /> <br />1) Approve the promotion of Sophia Jensen. <br />2) Do not promote Sophia Jensen. <br /> <br />RECOMMENDATION: <br />If removed from the consent agenda: <br />“Motion to promote Sophia Jensen to Senior City Planner” <br />ATTACHMENTS: <br />• None
