This project includes FieldTurf CoolPlay product
which is an artificial playing surface that is a layered
system of sand, cryogenic rubber and composed
cork. These components will provide a 20-degree
reduction in surface temperature. The Fernbrook
Fields are the first in the Midwest to use this type of
system. The design blends the highly engineered
synthetic turf playing surface, that’s responsive to
intense weather conditions providing playability
under normally unplayable conditions, with attractive
support amenities delivering the ultimate practice,
game and tournament venue.
Combining four full size synthetic turf fields with
new state of the art turf technology, LED lighting,
picnic pavilion, community gathering space and
community playground makes this project unique.
As this is an athletic facility it also is a park facility for
the community. The park is open to the community
for recreational use anytime and the fields, when not
scheduled, are open to the public for use. This new
facility meets the need of providing a large athletic
complex capable of hosting large events and
tournaments a goal and need identified in the park
master plan.
PARTNERSHIPS
The Fernbrook Fields project was built in partnership with Osseo Area Schools, Hennepin
County Youth Sports Program, Maple Grove Youth Lacrosse Association, Maple Grove Youth Football Association and Maplebrook Soccer Club. This partnerships were essential in the
planning, building and operations of this large athletic complex.
Using an 80/20 partnership model, the City of Maple Grove has made a practice of working with youth sports associations to share in the capital costs. Together the partnering
associations committed to a shared 20% capital investment to construct the new facility. Working with City staff, agreements were secured that included priority use time for each
association. All associations worked together creating a synergistic relationship ensuring the best outcome for the partners and the community.
PROJECT DESIGN, ARCHITECTURE & TECHNOLOGY
0.52 MILES
FUN FACTS
distance around the fields
fill removed from the site
550 TRUCK LOADS
feet of drain tile5.26 MILES
feet of storm sewer pipe1.36 MILES
1.4M GALLONS
water storage in the field
9.10 ACRES of artifical turf
(largest in the Midwest)
of structural steel49 TONS
20,000 linear feet of electrical conduit
55,000 linear feet of wire
In-fill turf:
1,300 TON: SAND
120 TON: COOL PLAY
480 TON: RUBBER
First application of cool play in the Midwest
