POSITION TITLE <br />Fire Captain <br />DEPARTMENT: Fire <br />REPORTS TO: Assistant Fire Chief <br />GRADE LEVEL: 7 <br />FLSA STATUS: Full-Time, Non-Exempt <br />SCHEDULE: This position is normally assigned to a 2,912 (annual) hour shift. Each shift is <br />responsible for working seven inconsecutive days within a 21-day period. <br />POSITION SUMMARY <br />This position protects life and property by performing fire suppression, rescue and emergency medical services, <br />hazardous materials incident mitigation, and fire prevention. This position provides leadership ensuring <br />suppression, emergency medical services and specialized responses are conducted within the expectations of <br />the Lake Elmo Fire Department. <br />This position is primarily responsible for the following areas of impact: <br />•The Captain maintains fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities, participates in training; and performs <br />intermediate troubleshooting and analysis, makes recommendations, and keeps records as required. This <br />position makes decisions that are non-routine but within established precedence of choices; <br />troubleshooting is intermediate; and financial impacts are isolated and managed. <br />•The Captain provides daily analytical and tactical support towards Fire Department operations and is <br />responsible for a wide range of duties that need to be performed completely with attention to detail and in <br />a timely fashion. <br />•The Captain is responsible for providing work direction to firefighters and upholding fire department <br />operating standards and procedures to ensure consistent and effective service is provided to the <br />community. Work is performed under limited supervision. <br />•The Captain supervises the members of their assigned shift, other shifts as necessary, and through the <br />Chain of Command, a paid-on call Lieutenant and squad of paid on call Firefighters. <br />ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES <br />Emergency Response / Essential Functions <br />•Provides work direction and supervision to firefighters through training, open communication, coaching <br />and mentorship to ensure that Fire Department Standard Operating Guidelines are followed. Ensures <br />positive public relations are upheld and practiced by firefighters on and off scene during a scheduled shift. <br />Directs firefighters on shifts to perform tasks and ensure that all details are completed for each duty day. <br />•Perform firefighting activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, <br />laying hose and performing fire suppression, containment, ventilation and extinguishing tasks. <br />•Performs medical aid and rescue activities including administering first aid, operating EMS equipment <br />such as monitor/defibrillator, portable suction units, etc., performing extrication and providing other <br />assistance as required. <br />•The Captain serves as the designated crew and/or shift leader (in absence of a Chief Officer). <br />•Performs salvage operations including removing excess water, shoveling out debris, patching windows and <br />holes, placing tarps and performing other cleanup tasks as directed. <br />•Attends regular and assigned training, drills and meetings to maintain and upgrade skills including drills, <br />demonstrations, and technique training. <br />•Inform Command Staff of performance assessments and fire department updates observed on shift to
