Fire Captain Updated: April 2026 <br />• Must be capable of working independently and coordinating projects, deadlines, and working well with <br />diverse groups. <br />• Able to manage multiple tasks including ability to plan, prioritize, delegate and direct duties of paid-on-call <br />Lieutenants and firefighters. <br />• Has excellent organizational, technology, and customer service skills. Can manage multiple and changing <br />priorities. <br />• Excellent written and oral communication skills including highly developed interpersonal and <br />communication skills. Exercise strong discretion and independent judgment. <br />• Considerable knowledge of public relations and conflict resolution techniques. <br />• Knowledge of the principles of Fire techniques and building and fire codes. <br />• Proficiency in preparing functional presentations using various methods and media. <br />• Ability to maintain fit testing annually for use of respirator and N95 masks. <br />• Commitment to exceptional customer service and a positive attitude. <br />• Demonstrates a team player approach and a high level of professionalism in assisting staff. <br />• Demonstrates initiative in process improvement opportunities. <br />• Ability to perform successfully with minimal supervision. <br />• Ability to maintain adequate and positive working relationships with staff and the public. <br /> <br /> <br />MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS <br />• Possess and maintains a valid Minnesota driver's license or equivalent out-of-state license <br />• Education: High school diploma or GED <br />• Experience: Three (3) years of experience as a firefighter or higher rank in a combination or full-time fire <br />department. <br />• Experience with computers and a variety of office software, including Microsoft Office Suite, ImageTrend, <br />Vector Scheduling, Vector Training, and Tablet Command. <br />LICENSES/CERTIFICATION <br />• Licensed by the State of Minnesota as a firefighter, or the ability obtain licensing at the time of <br />appointment. <br />• Certified by the NREMT as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). <br />• Fire Apparatus Operator – Pumper <br />• Fire Instructor I <br />• Fire Officer I <br />• First Responder Inspector or obtain within 12 months of hire. <br />• Blue Card (Local Hazard Zone Management) or obtain within 18 months of hire. <br /> <br />DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS <br />• Three (3) years of full-time experience as a Lieutenant or higher rank in a combination or full-time fire <br />department. <br />• Line officer supervisory experience. <br />• Associate degree and/or bachelor’s degree in Fire Science or related field of study. <br />• Fire Apparatus Operator – Aerial and Mobile Water Supply <br />• Respond within 20 minutes of the Lake Elmo Fire Station (3880 Laverne Avenue North, Lake Elmo, MN
