No fill should be placed on frozen subgrades. No frozen soils <br />should be used as fill. Frost should not be allowed to penetrate below the footings. If winter excavation <br />and filling activities are planned, we recommend material selected for backfill and fill (to achieve design <br />grades) consist of clean, coarse sand with less than 12 percent passing a #200 sieve. Frost should not be <br />permitted to penetrate below footings. Compaction effort will vary with depth of fill placed and the <br />structure it intends to support. Based on the anticipated fill depths, soil types and structures, in most <br />areas we anticipate typical levels of compaction in the range of 95 to 100 percent of standard Proctor <br />would be suitable, but would be further defined as part of the final evaluation. <br />D.1.d.Grade Raises <br />As final grades were not provided for this preliminarily evaluation, should engineered fill be placed to <br />raise grades, considerations should be made in regards to long term consolidation of the native soils. <br />Small grade raises on the order of 2 to 5 feet may be made with minimal risk of post construction <br />consolidation of the exposed underlying native soils and the fill itself. Long-term consolidation of the <br />soils, especially if clay is used for fill or filled upon, may be a consideration if grade raises extend above <br />5 feet. <br />D.2.Spread Footings <br />D.2.a.Embedment Depth <br />For frost protection, we recommend embedding perimeter footings at least 42 inches below the lowest <br />exterior grade in heated portions of the building. Interior footings may be placed directly below floor <br />slabs. We recommend embedding building footings not heated during construction, and footings in <br />unheated areas at least 60 inches below the lowest exterior grade. <br />D.2.b.Net Allowable Bearing Pressure <br />Based on the soil boring results and the above-described site grading procedures, it is our opinion the <br />exposed glacial soils and engineered fill would be anticipated for support of spread footings sized for an <br />allowable soil bearing pressure from 2,000 to 5,000 pounds per square foot. <br />D.3.Interior Slabs <br />D.3.a.Subgrade Modulus <br />After the site grading and building pad preparation has been completed, we anticipate the floor subgrade <br />will be engineered fill or suitable native soils. We recommend using a modulus of subgrade reaction, k, of
