Lake Elmo Agenda Section: Planning, Land Use and Zoning
City Council No. 9D
,September 5,
2006
Commission — Lake Elmo Airport 2025 Plan
Background Information for September 5, 2006•
City Administrator Martin Rafferty, Planner Chuck Dillerud, and Assistant Planner Kelli Matzek along with
representatives of Baytown Township and West Lakeland Township recently attended a meeting with the
Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) staff and its consultants to discuss the Lake Elmo Airport Long
Term (2025) Comprehensive Plan Update now underway at MAC.
While the planning process is not yet complete, research that has been recently completed by their
consultant has lead MAC to the conclusion there is at least a need for increased hanger space at Lake Elmo
Airport. MAC staff also advises that, whenever the question of increased runway length is raised, aircraft
owners will always favor such improvements from an aircraft operations safety perspective. Therefore
runway extensions are included as draft airport development concepts. No runway relocation is now
proposed — as it had been in the past.
MAC presented three draft concepts for inclusion in the 2025 updated plan for local government continent:
• leave the airport runways as -is, but create additional hanger development on the east side of the
airport site
• extend the southwest/northeast runway from 2,850 feet to 3,200 feet with hanger development
• extend the southwest to northeast runway from 2,850 feet to 3,900 feet with hanger development
The local government representatives at the meeting agreed that a fourth alternative be no fug
develo men- at the airport (runways or hangers)
MAC staff has requested City comments on the draft airport development options that have been presented
by September 22. Thereafter MAC will conduct a Public forum on the draft 2025 Lake Elmo Airport Plan at
an unspecified date in the future — probably at the Baytown Town Hall.
Action items:
Council comments on the MAXC draft 2025 development
concepts for the Lake Elmo Airport. To be transmitted to MAC.
Attachments:
1. Draft Concept Plans Graphics
Time Allocated:
