CITY OF
LAKE
July 10, 1989
City of Lake Elmo 510
3800 Laverne Avenue North / Lake Elmo. Minnesota 55042
Washington County Board of Commissioners
14900 61st Street North, P.O. Box 6
Stillwater, MN 55082
Attn: Commissioner Russ Larkin
Dear Commissioners:
It has come to our attention that the Board will be considering the
recommendation of the Washington County Library Board, relative to the
Lake Elmo branch library, at the meeting of July 11.
Although we have not had the benefit of reviewing the Library Board's
recommendations, it is our understanding that the Board will be
recommending that the County not purchase the Lake Elmo Bank Building
to upgrade and increase library services for the City of Lake Elmo;
that the Library Board will instead recommend, as a long-range
alternative, the phasing out of library rental facilities and an
alternative site for the Library to serve both Oakdale and Lake Elmo.
The Lake Elmo City Council urges you to retain your commitment to the
residents of Lake Elmo by retaining a branch library in the Old
Village area, or the area recently platted just North of Highway 5.
We would further suggest that the purchase of the Lake Elmo Bank
Building would provide a fiscally responsible and reasonable
alternative to the purchase of a site and the construction of a new
building.
The library is an intricate part of our Old Village area; it is a
facility which the council and residents value and consider to be
essential to our community.
Sincerely,
Susan Dunn
Mayor
