Zignego Agency c./hisurance
3880 Laverne Avenue North / Lake Elmo, Minnesota 55042 / (612) 777-8788
January 30, 1990
CITY OF LAKE ELMO
3800 Laverne Avenue No.
Lake Elmo, Mn., 55042
Attn: Mary Kueffner, Acting City Adm.
RE: ACCIDENT & DISABILITY COVERAGE
Dear Mrs. Kueffner:
At your request I have reviewed Mr. Tritz's letter of January 5, 1990.
This letter pertains to the availability of the Accident Policy for
members of the city council and other various city boards, committies
and/or commissions.
Altho this coverage seems very beneficial to those in need it should
be noted that it does not appear to offer any medical expense cover-
age. The coverage brochure which they had included outlines the various
benefits and indicate that this is for accidental death benefit and dis-
memberment. There is also a disability benefit which pays a maximum
of $400.00 weekly in the event of a total disability and is payable
for 26 weeks. Realizing the city's worker's compensation policy does
not extend to council members this may be one method of offering them
accidental death benefit and some form of total disability coverage
if the injury or death is the result of council business.
The overall cost seems to be fair on the per person basis and the company
they indicate that will provide this coverage is a reputable company.
Basically this would have to be a decision as to whether or not the
city wants to expend the funds for this protection. It does indicate
that all members of the respective board or commission must be covered
and that it is not offered on an individual choice basis. It does not
appear that this coverage is part of the self-insurance program thru the
League of Minnesota Cities, but rather thru a special group which is
indicated on the letter.
