Why Paved Shoulders? <br />c. Environmental <br />♦ Gravel shoulders are inadequate with regard to <br />pollutants. <br />Produces "ortho-phosphorus" — nutrient that <br />leads to algae blooms in receiving waters. <br />Leads to increase in TSS (total suspended <br />solids). <br />♦ No significant decrease in direct stormwater runoff <br />as compared to paved shoulders. <br />
