AGENDA ITEM: Washington County Sheriff’s Contract for Services

BACKGROUND:
The Council has discussed adding a sergeant through the budget process and had a presentation from
Sheriff Hutton at the November work session. The Council asked for community cost comparison data at
that meeting. It is provided below.

ISSUE BEFORE COUNCIL:
Should the City terminate the existing contract and approve a new contract to add a sergeant in 2017?
PROPOSAL DETAILS/ANALYSIS:
Included in the packet are a terminate of the current agreement, a new agreement for 2017, and a draft letter
to accompany the contract that explains the city does not expect the new sergeant to start until April 2017.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The increased cost of the sergeant is estimated at $120,000 annually. Since the position will not begin in
Lake Elmo until April the cost will be $90,000. This is consistent with the adopted 2017 budget.
OPTIONS:
1) Terminate the Existing Contract and Approve the New Contract for 2017
2) Terminate the Existing Contract, Amend and then Approve the New Contract for 2017
3) Keep existing contract
RECOMMENDATION:
If removed from the consent agenda:
Motion to terminate the existing contract and approve a new contract for 2017 with the Washington
County Sheriff’s Office.
