Occupation: Veterinarian/Professor Address: 2189 Legion Lane Ct N
Phone Number: 612 991 3066 Email: dominic.travis@gmail.com Resume Attached(optional): Yes® No❑
1. Why are you interested in serving on this Committee?
I have been an associate professor of ecosystem health at the UMN College of Veterinary Medicine and School of
Public Health for the past seven years; we have lived in Lake Elmo for three. My business is understanding and
managing health threats at the interface of humans, animals and the environment. I live in Lake Elmo with my wife
and three kids and love this area. Thus, I am concerned with the balance between natural resources and development.
In addition, from what I can tell there has not been a focus on wildlife (terrestial or aquatic)on this committee to date and I
would be interested in that as well. Bottom line, I do this for a living, so I would like to help.
2. What experience and qualifications do you have that demonstrate your ability to support the Purpose and Scope of
this Committee?
have twenty years professional experience as a veterinary public health epidemiologist, conducting research,
education activities, service and outreach on ecosystem health. I have been an administrator,teacher/educator
and scientist, having managed large projects in North and South America, 15 countries in Africa, and SE Asia.
I currently have several research projects in Minnesota surrounding the sustainable use of natural resources in the
face of human development. I work with MDNR, MDH, MPCA on issues intersecting industry(livestock agricultlure
and extractive)and aquatics, frogs, birds, moose, wolves, deer, among others, and am on several committees at the
State level (MDNR and MDH). I also work with a MN tribal community on the sustainability of their natural resources
and cultlural practices and values, so have context to add there. These involve issues of ecosystem resilience and
sustainability as well as food and water safety and security.
3. What do you consider to be the major challenges facing the City of Lake Elmo regarding issues addressed by this
Committee?
Optimizing the balance between city/county/state development goals (population size and land use)with
preservation/conservation of traditional local culture and natural resource health and sustainability.
4. How much time do you have to contribute to the Committee including meeting preparation, meeting participation and
other opportunities as they may exist?
I will make time for meetings and my assignments in 2017; as of 2018 1 will have more time to plan for other
opportunities. I like to be pretty involved in my commitments.

1. Why are you interested in serving on this Committee?
Two primary reasons:
1) What I believe to be important: I have lived in Lake Elmo since 1992, love this city, and care deeply
that this city continue to be beautiful (e.g. natural and healthy habitat for animals/nature, neighborhoods
that reflect the rural ambiance, etc)which requires finding and making smart decisions to balance rural with
the pressures of growth. This city is a gem and retaining the qualities that make it a gem as change
happens, which is inevitable, is not easy. I believe this can only be accomplished with thoughtful and
unemotional fact based decisions that find the best possible balance for our community.
2)Where I want to invest my time: I have had a busy and successful professional life that required
extensive travel and have reached the point in my life when I have time and want to invest back into a
community that I have had the pleasure of enjoying for over 20 years. I have a passion for the environment
as you would immediately experience if you were to come to our home where we have invested time,
energy and money into making it as environmentally friendly as possible.
2. What experience and qualifications do you have that demonstrate your ability to support the Purpose and Scope of
this Committee?
My hobby/passion is landscaping and the environment(I know bushes, trees, etc that make a natural and
healthy Minnesota habitat/environment and if I do not know, I know where to go to find out). My
profession was business where I hard decisions as to investment, resources, and people-where the best
decisions are the ones made on fact and are in the interest of the business and people. I feel that I
would add knowledge and leadership that would add value to the committee, council and community.
3. What do you consider to be the major challenges facing the City of Lake Elmo regarding issues addressed by this
Committee?
I have limited experience with this committee, primarily over the last couple months, and have reached
the conclusion that the intentions may be honorable, but the actions and resulting outcomes need to be
adjusted so that it truly is functioning in support of the community as a whole and for the city council. This
requires a committee culture where input from the community is valued, facts are important, and
emotions/personal bias is checked at the door.
4. How much time do you have to contribute to the Committee including meeting preparation, meeting participation and
other opportunities as they may exist?
I at a minimum would be able to contribute several nights a week every month, 1-2 weekdays (Monday-
Friday)a month, and personal time on weekends.
