ISSUE BEFORE COUNCIL: Review month end activity update from fire department. Advise on
any additional information requested.
PROPOSAL DETAILS/ANALYSIS:
We had 42 calls for June.
1 Fire alarm
1 Arcing, shorted electrical equipment
1 Structure fire
2 Dispatched and cancelled en route
1 Electrical wiring/equipment problem
27 Medicals
2 Gas leaks
3 Car accidents with injuries
2 Car fires
1 Steam or other gas mistaken for smoke
1 Water rescue
42 Total
A command vehicle did not respond on 5 calls for a response rate of 88%. Average response was just
over 6 minutes. 14 calls had 3 or less responders minus the Duty Officer with multiple calls having only
1 personnel on the apparatus.
Department drills for the month:
#1 – CEU (Building Construction and Underground Fires)
#2 – Live Burning at the Training Center
#3 – Station Drill (Make-up SCBA training; Ladder Truck training; Washington Cty Radio updates and
reprogramming)
Points of interest:
- Staffing is still the prime concern:
1 FF continues on Leave of Absence
2 regular daytime responders will no longer be regularly available for daytime response
1 Personnel officially resigned and is no longer on the roster
1 call required a double tone and even after the second tone only 1 personnel reported to the
station besides the Command vehicle
The last of the 3 potential recruits this year has reported that he is unable to continue the hiring
process at this time. He is still looking to join but is too busy for the time being
- We are actively researching the potential of creating a LEFD Facebook page and getting more
engaged in social media. More to follow on this matter
- Our call response time has improved by 20% in the past 2 months, which of course is great, but
that number is a little misleading. More calls this past couple months have been during hours
that the station is manned as well as an increase in calls closer to the manned station and more
personnel are rolling out by themselves due to staffing issues.
- We were able to attend the food truck event at the Stillwater High School this month as a Fire
Prevention event for us. The kids loved the fire truck and the community had a lot of great
questions as usual.
- One of the most important notes of the food truck event was that an informal survey was
conducted with all of the children spoken to. During that survey it was nearly unanimous that
they wanted to be Fire Fighters instead of Police. That might have had something to do with the
plastic fire helmets we were passing out but we can’t be sure.
