ITEM: Sunfish Lake Park Report – Follow up to January 8, 2008 City Council mtg.

SUMMARY:
The City Council reviewed the Sunfish Lake Park report written by the Park Commission regarding potential future uses at the park at the January 8th council meeting. Chairman Steele
provided a presentation to the City Council on the report and answered their questions and comments.
The following are unofficial notes on councilmember comments taken by staff during the discussion:
Johnson - Clarification is important; include more detailed descriptions (i.e. what would be included in a picnic area);
Johnson - Suggest including a swing set or tot lot so all ages can enjoy the area
Johnston - Park land is difficult to be used for anything but park uses;
Johnston - If Area 2 (farmed area) were not utilized for ball fields needed by the city, money would need to be spent to purchase the land elsewhere;
Smith - Believes there will be opportunities for ball fields elsewhere in the city;
Smith – Concern about limiting existing facilities to what is there (i.e. portable toilet);
Smith – Requested clarification be included on term “large facility”;
Smith – The area south of the park should be looked at for purchase if it becomes an option;
DeLapp – An easement through the Minnesota Land Trust would likely need specific numbers with an ending date for improvements to be built;
Johnston – Would like to see a plan for the city of where recreational facilities could be added;
Park – Ball fields could be located elsewhere in the city;
DeLapp – Are the city parks being used or are they just being scheduled;
Johnson – Ball parks need to be clearly identified
Johnson – Area 2 of the park will have an impact on Area 1; Area 2 should enhance Area 1
Johnson – Would encourage a whole family approach to future uses
DeLapp – Large properties adjacent to Sunfish Lake Park will provide opportunities for buffering the park in the future if a development comes forward
