BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Two “Expressions of Interest” and one Cross Country Ski Grant-in-Aid maintenance application
were submitted the Minnesota DNR in the past week. Both expressions of interest were
submitted to the Metro Greenways grants program - - one requesting $8,306.00 for the
development of a natural resource management grant for SFLP and the other requesting $30,350
for (1) The prairie restoration of an approximately 20 acre parcel that is currently being cropped;
(2) The planting of natives at the park entrance and along the drive into the park; (3)
improvements to the parking area that include the delineation of the parking area through
landscaping and the installation of a rain garden. The GIA maintenance application requests a
grant in the amount of $6,123.00 for the year-round maintenance of the SFLP trails.
Carol Kriegler will provide a brief update on the status of these opportunities as well as another
grant opportunity through the DNR’s Remediation Fund Grant Program. This program is available
for the compensation for damage to resources from the release of hazardous substances from
closed landfills. Fee title acquisition of natural areas and ecological restoration are eligible
projects. Funds are available in amounts between $30,000.00 and $500,000.
While the next application requests for the program are not due until next spring, the park
commission may want to begin planning for an application to this program.
