ITEM: Washington County Conservation District staff presentation about prairie
restoration and natural resource management practices and procedures
SUBMITTED BY: Carol Kriegler, Project Assistant
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The Park Commission has expressed an interest in Area 2 of Sunfish Lake Park being restored to
prairie. The nearly finalized conservation easement expresses this goal as well.
Thousands of prairies have been restored and managed in parks, wildlife refugees, conservation
areas, natural resource areas and private lands throughout the Midwest. A vast amount of
knowledge is available regarding the various processes and procedures for restoring and
managing prairies and other habitats. If a prairie restoration plan or natural resource
management plan is implemented at Sunfish Lake Park, it will not be novel or experimental. The
plans will be based on sound and tested ecological principles.
Jyneen Thatcher of the Washington County Conservation District and the city’s forester Dr. Kathy
Widin, will make an informal presentation about prairie restoration and natural resource
management practices and procedures.
