ITEM: “Sunfish Lake Park West” Discussion – Exploration of opportunities and
limitations regarding “turn-back” of area currently within the landfill.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Peter Tiffany, MPCA Senior Engineer for the Washington County Landfill clean-up project will
attend the meeting and provide and update on the project as well as an overview of the
opportunities and limitations regarding the turn-back area currently in landfill.
Clean-up of the Washington County Landfill began on June 2 and is scheduled to be complete no
later than October 31, 2012. The work is being done to address groundwater contamination
including PFC's and other contaminants. Once complete, the footprint of the actual landfill will be
reduced by approximately 6 acres. These 6 acres will be available to the city for recreational /
park purposes.
Enclosed is a map of the site indicating a rough estimation of the existing and final landfill
footprints as well as final grading plan so the commission can get a sense of the proposed
contours of the area. The purpose of this review and discussion is to begin to do some planning
for the site as well as pursuit potential funding opportunities for restoration and / or development.
