BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Clean-up of the Washington County Landfill began on June 2 and is scheduled to be complete no
later than October 31, 2012. The work is being done to address groundwater contamination
including PFC's and other contaminants. Once complete, the footprint of the actual landfill will be
reduced by approximately 6 acres. These 6 acres then, will be available for to the city for
recreational purposes.
Enclosed is a map of the site indicating a rough estimation of the existing and final landfill
footprints as well as final grading plan so the commission can get a sense of the proposed
contours of the area. At the August 24 Park Commission meeting, several questions were
generated for the PCA for the purpose of determining what constraints or limitations might be
placed on the area by the MPCA. In addition, there was a strong interest in learning what
flexibility there might be in regards to the grading contours. Carol Kriegler will report on the
PCA’s responses to these questions and inquiries. The purpose of the review is to begin to do
some planning for the site as well as the pursuit of funding opportunities.
