ITEM: Update on MPCA landfill remediation project grading / landscape plans and discussion
related to potential future recreational uses of Sunfish Lake Park West and possible survey
soliciting community input.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The Commission has previously reviewed several sets of MPCA’s proposed landfill grading plans
for the area of the landfill to be turned back to the City for park use. Following each review, Park
Commission comments have been forwarded to the MPCA project engineer. In turn, grading
plans have been revised by the MPCA in response to Park Commission and staff comment. In
addition, the Park Commission has reviewed and provided comment on 3 options for landscaping
the site, as developed by a TKDA landscape architect at TKDA, the city’s contracted engineers.
The 3 landscape options were also reviewed by City Forester Dr. Kathy Widin with her comments
also being forwarded to TKDA and the MPCA.
Carol Kriegler will provide on update on the grading and landscape plans for the site, including
the MPCA’s recent proposed revision to the grading plan based on their discovery of
unanticipated high levels of waste on the west end of the site.
The Park Commission is being asked to provide comment on the revised grading plan as well as
continue discussions related to potential future recreational uses of the Sunfish Lake Park West
and possible survey soliciting community input on the matter.
