SUMMARY AND ACTION REQUESTED: The city council is being asked to authorize the hiring of three firefighters – Mr. Moe Butler, Mr. Paul Jorgenson and Ms. Kristine Johnson. These three firefighters have served as probationary firefighters for six months or more and have met the firefighter qualifications for hiring on the department. This includes completing Firefighter I and II training, HazMat Awareness and Operations training, CPR and First Responder training. The hiring of these firefighters will bring the number of regular firefighters to 25. The fire department allocation is 28 firefighters up to 35 including officers. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Start dates with the department:
o Mr. Moe Butler began on July 6, 2005 o Mr. Paul Jorgenson began on January 16, 2006
o Ms. Kristine Johnson began on August 15, 2006 Moving from probationary status to firefighter status means that the firefighters will be outfitted with turn out gear for an estimated cost of $1,500. The firefighters will be paid at the full rate for drills and calls rather than the probationary 2/3 pay rate. The budget can accommodate the additional personnel, pay and equipment purchases. RECOMMENDATION: Chief Malmquist recommends hiring Mr. Butler, Mr. Jorgenson and Ms. Johnson as firefighters.
