Tom Bouthilet, Finance Director
SUMMARY AND ACTION REQUESTED: The city council is being asked to authorize the conditional hiring of Mr. Michael Cornell and Mr. Matt Smigleski as probationary firefighters pending passing the pre-placement physical exam done by the department physician. Mr. Cornell and Mr. Smigleski have met all the criteria for qualifying as probationary firefighters. This includes: attending three drills, passing being interviewed and passing an ability test. The hiring of two probationary firefighters bring the firefighter number to 27. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Mr. Cornell lives within the 5 ½ minute response time for fire calls. Mr. Smigleski will respond to Monday through Friday daytime 8 AM to 5 PM fire /rescue calls because he works in the city of Lake Elmo and has been assured by his employer that he will be available to respond to calls. (His work is located across from fire station #1). Mr. Smigleski is also a firefighter and EMT for the city of St. Anthony, where he responds to night and weekend calls. The city’s 5 ½ minute response time policy has an exception for unique circumstances, which Mr. Smigleski meets. Should Mr. Cornell and Mr. Smigleski become regular firefighters following their probation, they will bring the firefighter department’s component to 31 persons out of the 32 authorized. RECOMMENDATION: Chief Malmquist recommends conditionally hiring Mr. Cornell and Mr. Smigleski pending passing the pre-placement physical exam.
SUGGESTED MOTION FOR CONSIDERATION:
Move to authorize the hiring of Mr. Michael Cornell as a probationary firefighter pending Mr. Cornell’s passing the pre-placement physical exam and the hiring of Mr. Matt Smigleski as a
probationary firefighter pending Mr. Smigleski’s passing the pre-placement physical exam. Failure to pass the pre-placement physical exam is reason to withdraw the job offer as a
