HomeMy WebLinkAboutStaff Report-Hagbergs Environmentally Friendly RecognitionSTAFF REPORT DATE: May 1, 2018 PRESENTATIONS ITEM #: TO: Mayor and City Council FROM: Jake Foster, Assistant City Administrator AGENDA ITEM: Proclamation Recognizing Hagberg’s Country Marketing for their Sustainable and Environmentally-Friendly Practices BACKGROUND: At the December 5, 2018 meeting, Council approved the sustainability/environmentally-friendly practices recognition policy for local businesses, organizations, and individuals. The Environmental Committee discussed and recommended Hagberg’s Country Market for recognition through this policy at their February 26, 2018 meeting. ISSUE BEFORE COUNCIL: Should the Council recognize Hagberg’s Country Market for their environmentally responsible business practices as recommended by the Environmental Committee? PROPOSAL DETAILS/ANALYSIS: Staff recommends that Council formally recognizes Hagber’g Country Market for their environmentally-friendly practices as recommended by the Environmental Committee by reading the attached proclamation. Hagberg’s has engaged in the following environmentally-friendly practices: • Use of only locally sources beef and pork from sustainable sources • Limiting waste by using as much of their food animals as possible • Installation/use of closed-case/energy-efficient refrigerators • Upgraded energy-efficient LED lighting • Use of non-bleached butcher paper • Use of biodegradable sandwich containers • Use of compostable soup containers • Focus on more service at the meat counter rather than pre-packaged orders that create waste FISCAL IMPACT: None. RECOMMENDATION: Read proclamation formally recognizing Hagberg’s Country Market for their sustainable and environmentally-friendly practices.
