HomeMy WebLinkAbout#09 - Parks Commission ApptSTAFF REPORT DATE: January 8, 2019 REGULAR AGENDA ITEM: Parks Commission Appointments SUBMITTED BY: Kristina Handt, City Administrator BACKGROUND: The Parks Commission is established to review and make recommendations to the Council on the future development of city parks, including the establishment of and improvements to the parks, and to make recommendations to the Council on policies governing the maintenance and public use of the parks within the city. The Parks Commission shall consist of 7 members. The voting members shall be appointed by the City Council for a 3-year term. The terms of Dana Nelson, John Mayek and Mary Frick expired 12/31/18. The city notified all individuals of their terms expiring in early December asking them to reapply if they were interested in another term. In addition, Ellen Neuenfeldt resigned her position at the end of the year. With the change in membership approved in November to eliminate alternates and go to 7 full voting members, the alternates were also asked to reapply if they were interested in reappointment. The city advertised for applications from the general public as well. ISSUE BEFORE COUNCIL: Who should the Council appoint to the Parks Commission? PROPOSAL: The city received 6 applications for 4 open positions on the Parks Commission. The open positions include one term ending 12/31/19 (due to Neuenfeldt resignation) and three terms ending 12/31/21. Applications were received from the following: Isak Nightingale John Mayek Mary Frick Steve Schumacher Barry Weeks Sarah Berkowitz Interviews are scheduled for January 8th prior to the meeting. OPTIONS: Any of the above individuals would be eligible for appointment to the Parks Commission. RECOMMENDATION: “Move to appoint _____________ for a term ending 12/31/19.” “Move to appoint ______________, ______________, and _______________ for terms ending 12/31/21”
