AGENDA ITEM: Month End Fire Department Update for December 2018
REVIEWED BY: Kristina Handt, City Administrator
ISSUE BEFORE COUNCIL: Review month end activity update from fire department. Advise on
any additional information requested.
PROPOSAL DETAILS/ANALYSIS:
We had 37 calls in December:
1 Fire Alarms
1 CO Alarm
1 Cooking fire
4 Cancelled en route
22 Medicals
2 Car accidents with injuries
2 Gas Leaks
2 Car Fires
2 Other
37 Total
A Command vehicle did not respond on 11 calls for a response rate of 70%. Our average
response time was 6.6 minutes from alarm to arrival. 22 calls had 3 or less responders minus the
Duty Officer with 7 calls having only 1 personnel on the first due apparatus. 10 calls this month
had only shift personnel for responders.
Drills for the Month:
#1 - Make-up Ability test
#2 - Annua SCBA fit test / Wildland fires
Points of Interest:
- 1 new PT Fire Fighter started and is now in the rotation.
- 2 new PT Fire Fighters are moving through the process for hiring.
- PT positions were nearly fully staffed but then 2 personnel resigned. One for a FT FF
position and the other for a different PT job that fit his family schedule better.
- Several calls required double pages due to lack of Paid on Call responders.
- A Mutual aid structure fire request from one of neighbors went unanswered due to a lack
of our ability to staff a crew timely. We were cancelled by the time we were able to put
together a crew.
Part Timer Accomplishments:
- Began marking and replacing all hydrant paddles. All hydrants in the city will be tagged
with their GIS label and marked with a plastic paddle. All old fiberglass poles are being
disposed of as the project moves along.
- The 4 gas monitor was repaired in-house, calibrated and placed back into service.
- Cleaning and general maintenance at both station.
- Practical drills as assigned during shifts.
- Orientation and training of new PT personnel.
- Vehicle and equipment inspections.
- Assisted with Burn Permit applications.
- Assisted with the annual SCBA pack flow testing for the entire department.
- Assisted with testing and equipping new PT personnel and potential PT personnel.
