AGENDA ITEM: Month End Fire Department Update for February 2019

ISSUE BEFORE COUNCIL: Review month end activity update from fire department. Advise on
any additional information requested.
PROPOSAL DETAILS/ANALYSIS:
We had 48 calls in February:
1 Fire Alarms
1 CO Alarm
2 Structure fires
6 Cancelled en route
28 Medicals
4 Car accidents with injuries
2 Gas Leaks
2 Car Fires
1 Outside equipment fire
1 Nothing found on arrival
48 Total
A Command vehicle did not respond on 8 calls for a response rate of 83%. Our average
response time was 9.2 minutes from alarm to arrival. 19 calls had 3 or less responders minus the
Duty Officer with 4 calls having only 1 personnel on the first due apparatus. 9 calls this month
had only shift personnel for responders. 3 calls this month had the Chief or Duty Officer as the
only responder.
Drills for the Month:
#1 - Make the Move CEU – Hazmat
#2 - CPR Refresher
Points of Interest:
- We had a difficult call that ended with a great result. In the beginning of the month, we
were paged out for a 1 year old that was having difficulty breathing. Upon arrival, the
baby was turning blue and not breathing. Our personnel were able to get his airway
cleared and get him to breathe on his own prior to the ambulance arriving. We are unable
to get much information about our little patient due to privacy rules but we did confirm
that he was definitely in life threatening condition prior to our arrival and it is expected
that he will make a full recovery.
- 2 new PT Fire Fighters continue to move through the process for hiring.
- Interviewed 2 additional PT Firefighter applicants to fill the remaining vacancy and
potentially create a wait list.
- We had an unusually high call volume this past month. In fact, this February saw an
increase of over 50% over the previous 5 year average for the month.
- Equipment Committee began meeting and evaluating different brands of SCBA’s (Self
Contained Breathing Apparatus) for this years replacement.
- Finalized revisons to 3 Policies.
Part Timer Accomplishments:
- Continued working on hydrant paddle replacement and GIS labeling.
- Snow shoveling and salting at both stations.
- Cleaning and general maintenance at both stations.
- Practical drills as assigned during shifts.
- Training on assisting with fire inspections and subsequent date entry.
- Vehicle and equipment inspections.
- Assisted with Burn Permit applications.
- Shoveling and clearing fire hydrants from snow and ice as needed and found.
- Entering fire report data.
