AGENDA ITEM: Month End Fire Department Update for March 2019

ISSUE BEFORE COUNCIL: Review month end activity update from fire department. Advise on
any additional information requested.
PROPOSAL DETAILS/ANALYSIS:
We had 48 calls in March:
3 Fire Alarms
2 Structure fires, (1-Mutual Aid to Woodbury)
7 Cancelled en route
27 Medicals
7 Car accidents with injuries
1 Ice / Water Rescue
1 Steam mistaken for smoke
48 Total
A Command vehicle did not respond on 12 calls for a response rate of 75%. Our average
response time was 8.3 minutes from alarm to arrival. 24 calls had 3 or less responders minus the
Duty Officer with 5 calls having only 1 personnel on the first due apparatus. 9 calls this month
had only shift personnel for responders.
Drills for the Month:
#1 - Quarterly EMS
#2 - SCBA demo pack familiarization
#3 - SCBA search and rescue
Points of Interest:
- Both Captains attended the Annual Fire Officers School Conference in Duluth.
- Personnel continued evaluating SCBA’s (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) from
various vendors for purchase.
- The weekend “duty crew” began on March 1st and has already proven to be an asset to
the department as we struggle to provide the best service possible in the midst of
significant personnel shortages for the POC personnel.
- 2 new PT Fire Fighters started on shift and are in the process of training and acclimating
to the department.
- We saw another increase from the normal March call volume.
- Some of our members were featured in a news story for saving a dog that fell through
some thin ice.
- The Truck Committee began working on the specifications for the Tender.
Part Timer Accomplishments:
- Continued working on hydrant paddle replacement and GIS labeling.
- Snow shoveling and salting at both stations.
- Cleaning and general maintenance at both stations.
- Practical drills as assigned during shifts.
- Training on assisting with fire inspections.
- Vehicle and equipment inspections.
- Assisted with Burn Permit applications.
- Shoveling and clearing of hydrants from snow and ice as needed and found.
- Equipping, orienting, and training new hires.
