AGENDA ITEM: Approve Hire of Building Official

BACKGROUND:
At their March 19th meeting, Council authorized the advertising for a building official. Upon the
first posting the City did not receive any candidates that met the minimum qualifications. The
position was reposted at a higher salary range. After conducting interviews, staff is
recommending Mr. Kevin Murphy be hired as Building Official.
ISSUE BEFORE COUNCIL:
Should the Council approve the hire of Kevin Murphy as building official at the terms described?
PROPOSAL:
Mr. Murphy has over 20 years of experience serving as a building official and planning supervisor.
With this experience, it is recommended that Mr. Murphy be hired at a Step 6 which is $3,588
biweekly ($93,288 annually).
Mr. Murphy’s employment would be contingent based on the successful completion of background
checks and a pre-employment drug screen.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The total annual cost for hiring Mr. Murphy including taxes and benefits is approximately
$122,000. His time would be allocated 100% to the building department.

1. Hire Mr. Murphy at the terms described
2. Hire Mr. Murphy under different terms
3. Hire another candidate
4. Hire no one
RECOMMENDATION:
If removed from the consent agenda:
“Move to approve the hiring of Kevin Murphy as building official at the terms described.”
