AGENDA ITEM: Month End Fire Department Update for May 2019

ISSUE BEFORE COUNCIL: Review month end activity update from fire department. Advise on
any additional information requested.
PROPOSAL DETAILS/ANALYSIS:
We responded to 50 calls in May:
4 Fire Alarms
2 Grass fires
6 Cancelled en route
30 Medicals
3 Car accidents with injuries
3 Gas leaks
1 Power line down
1 Carbon Monoxide alarm
50 Total
A Command vehicle did not respond on 19 calls for a response rate of 62%. Our average
response time was 8.9 minutes from alarm to arrival. 25 calls had 3 or less responders minus the
Duty Officer with 2 calls having only 1 personnel on the first due apparatus. 14 calls this month
had only shift personnel for responders.
Drills for the Month:
#1 - Brush fires and hose lays
#2 - EMS pratical scenarios and hose lays
Points of Interest:
- Arbor Glen fundraiser raised enough money to buy a whole AED kit to replace one of the
outdated AEDs still in service.
- The weekend “duty crew” has helped greatly with call response during weekend nights
and evenings.
- The department provided fire truck rides for several winners of the Lake Elmo
Elementary spring carnival contest.
- Continue to see an upward trend of calls for the year.
- Personnel met with and developed a plan with a new city intern to assist us with mapping
for the hydrant program.
- Lt. Larry Cornell completed his 2 year term as the Station 1 Lieutenant. He will continue
his service to the city as a Fire Fighter at Station 1.
Part Timer Accomplishments:
- Continued working on hydrant paddle replacement and GIS labeling.
- Cleaning and general maintenance at both stations.
- Practical drills as assigned during shifts.
- Training on assisting with fire inspections.
- Vehicle and equipment inspections.
- Assisted with Burn Permit applications.
- Several PR events, (Lake Elmo Elementary contest winners and “Healthy Kids Running”
event at Oakland Jr. High) occurred during the month of May as well as several walk ins
from the public for tours of the station and apparatus.
- Identified, developed and instituted corrective efficiencies in data entry for the ELITE
run reporting system.
- Completed several in-house repairs to trucks, eliminating service calls.
- Assisted in the development of training ideas and training props.
