AGENDA ITEM: Appointment of Interim Chief
BACKGROUND: Fire Chief Greg Malmquist resigned effective January 10, 2020. We anticipate it being some time before
a new fire chief is appointed as we wait for the audit to be completed before beginning the search. In the meantime, there are chief duties that need to be completed.
ISSUE BEFORE COUNCIL: Should the Council appoint Mike Cornell as interim fire chief? PROPOSAL DETAILS/ANALYSIS: I am recommending the Council appoint Mike Cornell, currently Assistant Fire Chief, as Interim Chief. Since the Assistant Chief position is a paid on call (POC) position, I’m further recommending that Cornell receive a monthly stipend of $1,000 in recognition for the additional time to complete the chief duties. We would expect the time commitment to be at least 10 hours per week. The position would not be benefit eligible. The interim chief position is not expected to exceed 6 months, thereby making it exempt from PERA. Cornell would continue to earn fire relief credit as a POC.
FISCAL IMPACT: Up to $6,000 plus payroll taxes.

RECOMMENDATION: If removed from the consent agenda:
