HomeMy WebLinkAbout#04 - November 2020 Monthly PW ReportMAYOR AND COUNCIL COMMUNICATION DATE 12/15/2020 CONSENT AGENDA ITEM: Public Works Director Report SUBMITTED BY: Marty Powers, Public Works Director REVIEWED BY: Kristina Handt, City Administrator ISSUE BEFORE COUNCIL: City Council is asked to review and accept, as part of Consent Agenda, a brief description of activities that have taken place in the Public Works Department in the month of November 2020. PROPOSAL DETAILS/ANALYSIS: PARKS • Weekly garbage collection continues • Complete monthly park inspections and continue with repairs • The Lions Park warming house will not be open to the public this skating season due to half of the public works team utilizing it as an office during the pandemic. Portable toilets and picnic tables will be stationed near the skating rink for the season • Move seasonal equipment to pole shed to free up space • Cut in and woodchip a new trail connecting between Stonegate Park and Ivywood Parks • Several staff members were involved in an on-line continuing-ed tree inspectors course • Repair the board walk in Demontriville Wildlife Park area • Trim trees in many parks • Gather quotes for the 2021 replacement vehicle of the dodge 5500 hook truck SURFACE WATER • Complete annual MS4 stormwater system inspection. • Complete fall street sweeping STREETS • Potholes patching of large hazardous holes continued • Attended to downed trees and branches in ROW • Begin seasonal tree trimming ROW’s throughout the city City Council Meeting Date Consent/Regular Agenda Item #__ Page 2 • Collect road kill as identified • Complete maintenance on trucks and equipment as needed • Continue virtual monthly OSHA safety meetings- topics included defensive plow driving and 3 point contact • Correct/restore a ROW area off Julep Court that was disturbed by a resident without approval or permits • Attended to the streets and sidewalks after an 1 ½” snow and ice event on 11/11/2020 • Completed repairs to the damaged rear end and broken rear axles on the 1998 plow truck • List and auction off approved disposal items. Revenues exceeded $3000 without the utility van, which will be auctioned soon • Continue upgrading street signs • Begin annual staff performance reviews • Purchased a skid steer brush hog to replace the failed existing unit • Met with Mayor Elect Cadenhead for an introduction • Update Public Work’s asset list for Insurance Records • Replace three vandalized street signs SEWER • Continue daily rounds for preventive measures, compare pump run times and resolve alarms • Continue Weekly Proactive Pump downs of all Lift stations, Monthly Float Cleaning • Staff pulled a plugged Keats Lift station pump and cleared it • Complete new utility van outfitting and put into service • The main SCADA PLC board had electrical failures inside of it after the generator kicked on. Several components had to be replaced, re-wired and additional backup alarms were created WATER • Complete monthly MDH bacteria and fluoride sampling • Complete Monthly Generator and Safety Inspections of Equipment and Facilities • Continue daily rounds, chlorine/fluoride sampling and locates • Continue dropping off new construction meters • Continue correcting ongoing meter issues • The construction of the Well 5 building continues • Repair damaged hydrant • Repair failed fluoride chemical pump at well 4 • Submit well water draw down reports to DNR • Replace many large commercial meters with new, more accurate meters • Public Works staff member Mike Colemen and new utility billing hire Michelle Harbulak attended a virtual training on the Banyon utility billing software City Council Meeting Date Consent/Regular Agenda Item #__ Page 3 FACILITIES • Continue to Lower and Raise flags for Governor ordered half-staff events • Set up and take down election equipment • Install first aid cabinets in the Public Works shop and the warming house PANDEMIC PREPARDNESS • The Public Works crew continues to work in two teams out of two locations minimizing the sharing of equipment and tools • Additional cleaning supplies, rubber gloves, face masks, sanitizers and cleaning wipes have been provided RECOMMENDATION: Base on the activities listed above, City Council is respectfully asked to accept the November 2020 Public Works Report.
