BACKGROUND: The City of Lake Elmo Public Works Department utilizes a utility van to transport
needed supplies and tools into the field for locating, marking and repairing the utility system. The water
meters, paints and electronics must be kept in a heated unit to prevent freezing. The existing 2007 Ford
utility van is scheduled for replacement due to its due to age and inefficiencies.
ISSUE BEFORE COUNCIL: Should the City Council approve the purchase of the utility van as
recommended by staff, the MAC and as outlined in the 2020 Capital Improvement Plan?
PROPOSAL DETAILS/ANALYSIS: Proceeding with this purchase will benefit the city, its citizens and
utility customers by replacing an aged, inefficient vehicle. This vehicle will allow more head room, storage
and electric capabilities compared to the existing unit in an effort to increase the usefulness.
FISCAL IMPACT: Purchase of this vehicle shall not exceed $50,000 and will be funded through the
sewer and water funds as identified in the 2020 CIP.
OPTIONS: Approve purchase of the utility van
Do not approve purchase
Direct staff to further research need for purchase
