AGENDA ITEM: Special Meeting to Canvass Election Results

BACKGROUND: According to State Statute, municipal election results must be certified by the
City’s Canvassing Board within ten days of the election. The City Council serves as Lake Elmo’s
Canvassing Board for reviewing and certifying election results once the official data is received
from Washington County elections staff. Due to a recent court decision, the county must accept
absentee ballots that are postmarked by election day, for a period of seven days after election day.
Therefore, the county may be accepting and counting ballots as late as November 10th and won’t
be able to provide abstracts for canvassing until the morning of November 12th.
ISSUE BEFORE COUNCIL:
When should the Council meet to canvass election results?
PROPOSAL: Staff recommends scheduling a meeting of the Canvassing Board on the evening
of November 12th or November 13th.
FISCAL IMPACT:
None.
RECOMMENDATION:
“Motion to schedule a special meeting of the Canvassing Board for (date & time)”
