Motion
ITEM: Accept donation of a used “washer/extractor” from the Oakdale Fire
Department.
SUBMITTED BY: Chief Malmquist

SUMMARY AND ACTION REQUESTED: The city council is being asked to accept the
donation of a washer /extractor for cleaning fire equipment from the city of Oakdale fire
department. (The city is required to accept donations). Oakdale is purchasing a newer,
larger machine. If accepted the machine will go into Station 2, where there is no washing
machine at this time. There is a washer/extractor at station #1. The addition of a unit
at station #2 would decrease “turn around” time for gear washing by 50 %. The
department is required to wash gear twice a year and after any “significant” exposure. It
is inefficient and time consuming to wash 20 sets of gear from two stations all at
station 1. The cost to the city will be between $245 and $500 for electrical installation
of the washer/extractor and a charge for plumbing connections. A new washer/extractor
would cost $5,000 to $6,000. The cost of installation can be covered in the Fire
Department’s 2008 general maintenance budget and does not need to be authorized by
the city council as part of this action.
MOTION:
Accept the contribution of the gear washer/extractor from the city of Oakdale Fire
Department for Station #2 and direct the fire chief to thank the city of Oakdale for its
contribution on behalf of the city council.
