ITEM: Fall Pebble Park Buckthorn Removal Events

The Park Commission has expressed an interest in Buckthorn management in Pebble and Sunfish Lake Parks. Dr. Kathy Widen, the City’s Forester, has recommended that such an initiative
first be made in Pebble Park.
A buckthorn management/woodland restoration project has been scheduled for Pebble Park on Sat. Oct. 4th, from 9:00 to noon. The purpose of the event is two-fold. The event is intended
to be educational in nature and educate residents how to manage buckthorn and restore native woodlands to health. The city’s forestry consultant will demonstrate different methods
of buckthorn removal and discuss stump treatments. Secondly, participants are being asked assist in buckthorn removal at the park.
Staff has also made arrangements with the county’s sentence to serve program to have their crews remove buckthorn throughout the remainder of the park during the month of October.
The Commission is being asked to participate in the October 4 event and assist in promoting it.
