AGENDA ITEM: Hire Paid on Call Firefighters

BACKGROUND:
In July, we advertised for paid on call firefighters. We held the posting open through September so it
would be open during the LEFD open house in an attempt to get more candidates. Interviews were
completed in early October, and we made conditional offers to eight (8) applicants.
ISSUE BEFORE COUNCIL:
Should the following candidates be hired as paid on call Firefighters at the terms described below?
Austin Palvelka
Derek Johnson
Matt Oppelt
Kyle O’Shea
Paul Edgerton
Jeff Aldridge
Austin Eesley
Malachi Thomas
PROPOSAL DETAILS/ANALYSIS:
Upon approval, a start date will be determined contingent upon Background Screening, Drug Screening,
Psychological Evaluation and Abilities Test. Upon meeting those conditions, the applicant will be placed
on the department as a Probationary Firefighter.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The cost of pre-employment screening and wages for paid on call firefighters has been included in the 2025
budget.
OPTIONS:
1. Hire the above individuals as paid on call firefighters.
2. Re-advertise the position.
RECOMMENDATION:
If removed from the consent agenda:
Motion to hire Palvelka, Johnson, Oppelt, O’Shea, Edgerton, Aldridge, Eesley, and Thomas as paid
on call firefighters.
