Minutes of the Regular Meeting
May 18, 2009
Chairman Ames called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

Update on MPCA construction activities at the Washington County landfill and the
request for easements to place two monitoring wells in Sunfish Lake Park
Carol Kriegler reported there are currently 2 monitoring wells that have been placed
within Sunfish Lake Park by the MPCA. These wells are relatively unobtrusive, small in
size, and painted black. The MPCA has recently expressed the need for an additional
monitoring well (and associated easement) at each of these locations. These wells will
be differentl than those currently in place in that they will be deeper and allow the
agency to monitor water quality in the bedrock. Carol Kriegler and Kathy Widin have
visited each of the two sites to assess the potential impact, which is considered to be
minimal.
Ames requested that the Minnesota Land Trust review the MPCA’s request.
It was also reported that construction activity at the Washington County landfill is
expected to begin in the next couple of weeks in an effort to remediate PFC
contamination at the site.
Washington County Conservation District presentation about prairie restoration
and natural resource management practices and procedures.
Jyneen Thatcher of the Washington County Conservation District gave a presentation
about prairie restoration. Topics covered included, prairie plant / root structure, plant
species / types, duration of restoration process, typical process, planting following
agricultural use, sources / types of prairie seed, benefits of burning / herbicide
applications, ideal / challenging conditions, etc.
Blackford expressed an interest in having existing fauna at the site catalogued. This
interest is out of concern for the potential effects of pesticide use during the course of
prairie restoration activities.
Discussion on city trail system improvements / trail segment inventory.

Carol Kriegler reported that she had just received the work to date on the trail segment
inventory that the public works staff has been working on.
The Stonegate trail was discussed briefly. Carol Kriegler reported that the trail is slated
to serve as a base trail with thru-traffic from outside the neighborhood. The trail
improvement will be discussed further in the context of all other trail segments within the
trail system.
Given the time dedicated to the prairie restoration presentation, Ames requested that
items 6-10 of May’s agenda be given priority on the June agenda.
